364,698. Shaft furnaces. VEREINIGTE STAHLWERKE AKT.-GES., 69, Breitestrasse, Dusseldorf, Germany. Oct. 14, 1930, No. 30776. Convention date, Nov. 6, 1929. [Class 51 (ii).] A shaft furnace for sintering, roasting, and burning bricks or refractory material is provided with supply and discharge pipes so arranged that gaseous fuel may be supplied at the bottom, the draught being upwards, or solid fuel may be supplied at the top, the draught being downwards, either fuel being used according to the material to be treated or the fuel which is available. The furnace shown comprises a tapering casing 2 with a discharge duct 8 at the bottom from which extends an inclined discharge duct 9 with a valve 10 and gas seal 11, and also a vertical discharge pipe 12. Pipes 4 connected to the duct 8 serve for supplying gas and air or alternatively for discharging combustion products when solid fuel is used. When gas' firing is employed, the combustion products are drawn off by a fan 6. The furnace is provided with sight-holes 7 in the top cover, and with doors 13 in the side which serve to admit cooling air and also for emptying the furnace when it contains, for example, clay or bricks.
