Abstract

1,158,952. Operating tunnel furnaces. M. LEISENBERG. 20 Oct., 1966 [20 Oct., 1965], No. 46890/66. Heading F4B. A tunnel furnace has additional burners mounted at the discharge end of the firing zone capable of being operated at a high output to give a completely non-oxidizing atmosphere. The normal burners and the additional burners are operated at a standard level for a period, all the burners are then shut off and the air flow reduced while the charge is advanced through a given distance, and the additional burners are switched on to give a high output and a non-oxidizing atmosphere while the air flow remains at its reduced level, and the normal burners operate at a fraction of normal output. At the completion of the reduction phase, the output of all the burners is returned to normal, and excess air is fed to the kiln to burn off carbon deposits. The excess air is supplied through the additional burners.
