1,246,351. Tunnel kilns. M. POPPI. 12 Aug., 1969 [21 March, 1969], No. 40230/69. Heading F4B. A tunnel kiln for firing glazed ceramic tiles, is provided with both muffled combustion chambers 5, and direct firing lateral gas or oil burners 1 arranged in opposed pairs. Gases from the burners pass through honeycombed refractory blocks 2 on the decks of the kiln cars 3 and then rise through gaps 6, 7 past the tiles to be fired. About 10% of the total fuel supply is supplied to the burners 1. One burner of an opposed pair may be turned off.
