Abstract

1341316 Recuperative furnaces USS ENGINEERS & CONSULTANTS Inc 30 Nov 1971 [3 Dec 1970] 55613/71 Heading F4B In a recuperative furnace ceramic tiles 11 provide a series of air passages and flue gas passages forming a heat exchanger, air after passing through the heat exchanger discharges into an air tunnel 22 by which it is taken to a combustion chamber through an entry port 6 which is also fed with combustible gas, the flue gas passing to the flue gas passages via ports 8. According to the invention the entry port 6 has an area at least 75% of that of the air tunnel, and the flue gas ports have a combined area of at least 75% of the total area of the flue gas passages. The port 6 may be as large as tunnel 22 and the flue ports 8 may equal the flue gas passages, in area. The combustion chamber 2 is a soaking pit for ingots. The invention may also be applied to side-fired pits.
