Jan. 15, 1945, No. 1136: [Classes 51 (i) and 51 (ii)] A brick kiln 10 is fired by a mechanically stoked furnace or furnaces housed directly beneath the kiln floor 11, the latter being provided in the central region with an inlet or inlets for the hot furnace gases and adjacent the periphery with exhaust ports 35 leading'to an annular off-take flue 39. Fig. 1 shows a kiln fired by a single underfed furnace 14 to which fuel is supplied from a hopper 21 by a screw conveyer 20 housed in a tunnel 13 below the kiln floor, a similar tunnel 15 being provided at the opposite side of the kiln for the removal of ashes. A motor-driven fan supplies primary air through a duct 24 and secondary air through branches 25, 30 which are controlled by valves 27, 31 and deliver respectively through apertures 26 in the furnace wall 18 and ports 28 in the kiln wall 29. An extension 33 of the furnace wall 18 projects' upwardly into the kiln to cause the gases to spread out in the space below the roof 34. The exhaust ports 35 are fitted with stools 36 on which ware may be supported. Fig. 5 shows a kiln having two furnaces 40 fed from hoppers 42 on opposite sides of the kiln and illustrates modified arrangements of the exhaust ports which may comprise either parallel or radial rows of openings 45, 50 delivering into flues 47, 51 communicating with the annular off-take 53. In a further modification, :a rectangular kiln has three furnaces housed in transverse tunnels and arranged along the central longitudinal axis of the kiln.
