Abstract
1,059,972. Cremation furnaces. UNITED GAS INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 23, 1963 [Aug. 8, 1962], No. 30461/62. Heading F4B. In a cremation furnace comprising a main narrow combustion chamber 5 fired by air blast burners 14, a charging door 7, and a coffin support 6 disposed over a well 13 fired by air blast burners 15, flame ports 23 are provided in the side walls above the coffin support leading to downtakes 24. The flue gas paths are reversed at dust collecting surfaces 25 to enter a plurality of parallel uptakes opening into horizontal passages 30 having Venturi eductors 31. Below the coffin support 6 which may comprise spaced refractory bearers or a refractory grid, walls 9, 10 and 11 slope steeply downwards to the well, which opens by a sliding floor / damper 16 into a discharge chamber beyond which is a pulverizer, Fig. 1 (not shown). A recuperatory system may be disposed between the passages 30 and the Venturi eductor 31. In a modification, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), a secondary combustion chamber provided with the air blast burners is disposed below the well and has a similar sliding floor/damper. Combustion gases may be discharged into the flues through the surfaces 25 or into the well. The gas alone may be turned off at the burners, enabling them to be used as air jets. The charger, Fig. 1 (not shown), comprises a wheeled tubular frame with a coffin rest provided with rollers over which the coffin is slid manually or mechanically on to the support 6. Door 7 and damper 16 may be interlocked, to prevent charging before the latter has been opened and closed and to prevent operation of the latter while the former is open.
