Abstract

773,358. Electric cremation furnaces. BIRLEC, Ltd. Oct. 3, 1955 [Oct. 1, 1954], No. 28291/54. Class 39(3) [Also in Group XII] A cremation furnace has heating resistances housed separately in superposed refractory tubes 3 extending lengthwise within the side walls of the committal chamber, and air is blown through the tubes 3 from vertical ducts 14 extending from an air supply duct 13 at the front of the furnace. A coffin is supported on bearers 8 above an ash pit 9 which communicates with a rear vertical flue 9a opening into a smoke chamber 10 in the furnace roof. The smoke chamber 10 is divided by a longitudinal partition 11 extending from the rear almost to the front, and the flue 9a opens into the rear of one of the compartments so that gases produced by the furnace pass round the partition 11 to an outlet at the rear of the furnace. The air forced through the tubes 3 on one side of the furnace passes through a duct 16 into the flue 9a and from the tubes on the other side into the rear of the smoke chamber communicating with the flue 9a. Hence the tubes 3, which are preferably rectangular, are kept free from harmful furnace products, and complete combustion is ensured in the flue and the smoke chamber. Air may also be supplied to the smoke chamber, which may contain chequer bricks at positions between the flue 9a and the front of the partition. The resistances are of material immune to attack by the sulphur fumes, and extend through bungs at the ends of the tubes for connection to an electric supply.
