A crematory furnace has an open grid hearth above an ash-collecting hearth in a main chamber and a separate ash-refining hearth with independent heating means. The main hearth 8 is formed of L-section fire-bars, Fig. 6, of asymmetrical shape in plan and is heated by downwardly directed air blast burners 11, any of which may be supplied with gas and air or air alone. The dished ash-collecting hearth 9 is separated from the ash-refining grate 10 by a raised crest 29 and a cooling chamber 53 below the grate 10 leads to an ash-removing box with a removable cover and a removable drawer below it, Fig. 8, not shown. A horizontal air blast burner 30 is directed across the grate 10 from the rear of the furnace towards the crest 29. Flue openings 35 in the side walls of the furnace above the grate 10 lead to flues 36 along the sides of the ashcollecting hearth 9. Spaced vertical ducts connect the flues 37 to flues 14 leading from the front of the furnace above the arch 12 of the main chamber on either side of the burners 11 to the stack 38. Secondary air inlets 40 are provided at the rear end of flues 37 and in the front wall below the main hearth 8, directed towards the middle of the ash-collecting hearth 9.
