An open grate fire convertible to a slow combustion stove comprises a fuel chamber formed between a rear wall and a front wall which latter is made up of a lower portion having an adjustable air opening therein and an upper portion comprising spaced fire bars and a movable cover plate which in its closed position extends forwardly from said rear wall and downwardly over said firebars, thereby obscuring the openings formed by the spaces between the bars. As shown applied to a stove embodying a boiler 29 and air tubes 30, such as is described in Specification 576,723, [Group XIII], the fuel chamber is provided with a back wall 36, a V-shaped bottom wall 31 of grid formation, and fixed front bars 33. Also at the front beneath the bars 33 is a fixed plate 34 having a valve controlled air inlet 23. The cover plate is in two parts 17, 18, which are so arranged that when in a closed position the part 18 extends in front of the bars 33 and abuts the top of the plate 34, and an extension 35 of the cover plate seals the bottom edge of the fire back 21, thus ensuring that the combustion products are drawn downwardly beneath the wall 36 and boiler 29 and hence upwards past the air tubes 30 to the chimney. A heat insulating guard 37 formed from fire bricks and provided with corrugations 38 is disposed beneath the boiler. The cover plate may be formed in one part so shaped as to cover the top and the front of the fuel chamber when in closed position.
