[Also in Group XIII] An open fireplace comprises a grate sloping downwardly from the front, a flue with secondary air inlets extending from a point above the lowest part of the grate and a screen between the flue and the front of the fireplace with its lower edge above the mouth of the flue and its upper edge spaced from the top of the fireplace and level with or above the upper edge of the fuel supply opening so that gases from the fuel pass down between the screen and the flue through a combustion zone at the mouth of the flue. An open-fronted housing 2 is mounted in a fireplace recess so that a space 15 is left round the housing 2. A grate 5, ash-pan 6 and controllable primary air inlet 6a are provided at the bottom of the housing, and an outlet flue 7a leads from the top. The flue 7a forms an extension of a flue 7 formed between the back of the housing, which has secondary air inlets 10, and a plate 9 extending from some distance above the grate 5 to near the top of the housing 2. A screen 11, spaced from the plate 9, extends from above the bottom of the plate 9 to the level of or above the top edge of the front opening of the housing 2. A damper 12 allows the fuel space to communicate directly with.the flue 7a when the fire is lit. An adjustable hood 13 enables the extent of the front opening of the housing 2 to be adjusted, or the hood 13 may be lowered so that the depth of fuel on the grate may be increased. Air heated in the space 15 surrounding the fireplace passes out into the room at the top.
