[Also in Group XIII] In an open fireplace unit comprising a casing housing a grate in its lower part and having a back and two sides bounding the grate, an opening at the front above the grate and a hoodlike part above the opening provided with a restricted flue outlet, a cover plate is detachably mounted above the fuel space so as to close it at the top except for a restricted outlet. The metal casing comprises a back 8, side walls and a front wall with an opening through which heat is radiated and a controlled air inlet aperture 11a in its lower part. The lower part of the casing is provided with a rear firebrick 12 and side firebricks 13 sloping downwardly to the front. A grate 4 rests on legs on the base 6 of the casing. The upper part of the casing terminates in a flue outlet 16 in which is mounted a pivoted damper 17. A tube 31 passes through sealing partition 30 of expanded metal or wire mesh supporting beat resistant cement and an asbestos packing 32 seals the flue outlet 16 within the tube 31. A cover plate 24, resting on the side firebricks 13 is held in position by lugs 25 on the casing engaging notches in the cover plate, the rear edge of which is spaced from the fire back 12 to leave a restricted outlet for the combustion gases. When not in use the cover plate rests on the base 6 beneath-the ash pan 28. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown) the pivoted damper 17 mounted in the flue outlet is replaced by a baffle plate mounted on pivots near the top of the casing in front of the flue outlet. The baffle plate may be swung into a rearward position in which it rests against the back of the casing and allows only a restricted flow of gases to the flue or it may rest in an inoperative position against the front of the casing.
