Abstract

779,198. Air supply for combustion. FEDERATED FOUNDRIES, Ltd. May 26, 1955 [June 9, 1954], No. 16906/54. Class 126. A fireplace has a backwardly sloping fire-brick back with a secondary air passage behind, and forwardly sloping upper fireback, so that the fuel bed is of less depth from front to back at the grate than at the outlet of the secondary duct and gases evolved from the fuel resting against the lower part of the fireback are burnt in the secondary air. A fire-brick back 3 sloping upwardly away from the grate 1 forms the front wall of a secondary air passage 4 opening into a slot extending the full width of the top of the back 3. A fire resisting back wall 6 slopes forwardly above the slot at an angle of less than 60 degrees to the horizontal. Primary and secondary air are taken from below the floor through a duct 7, to a damper-controlled passage 8 leading to the ashpit and a second damper-controlled passage 9 leading to the secondary air passage 4 behind the fireback 3. The dampers 13, 14 are independently controlled by a lever at the top of a tube 13a extending through the hearth and a handle at the top of a rod 15 passing through the tube 13a respectively.
