A fire back boiler B in communication with hollow side cheeks A is provided with a plurality of inclined open flues b passing from the base of the boiler adjacent the front to a back flue a1, the water space of the boiler extending to the canopy of the fireplace. The lower part of the boiler has a forwardly-projecting, triangular section portion, the leading edge a4 of which lies below the normal level of fuel on the firebars. The base of the boiler or a part thereof is inclined so that the flues b are positioned at right-angles thereto. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), a further water space in communication with the side cheeks is provided below and behind the fire grate. Water enters the boiler via a pipe b3 and leaves via a pipe b4. The fire draws air either.under the fire bars from the room, Fig. 3 (not shown), or, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, through the damper-controlled under-floor duct C1 and the under-grate chamber c which is provided with an ash pan c1 A fret D may be included above the front of the grate to provide a support for fuel fed on to the forwardly-projecting portion of the boiler when an all-night fire is required. Alternatively a removable hopper may be hung on the fire-back to hold the reserve fuel. Horizontal and vertical flues a and a1 are provided below and behind the boiler leading to a chimney A2, the draught being controlled by a damper D3. A restrictor D2 with a recessed upper surface d is provided in the lower flue a to prevent ash passing through the flue a and to divert a portion of the combustion product into the inclined flues b.
