946,744. Hot-water boilers; open fireplaces. E. R. HINE, V. N. LOCKWOOD, and R. H. HINE. April 19, 1960 [April 20, 1959], No. 13326/59. Headings F4A and F4W. A fireplace unit has hollow side cheeks 2 between which communicates at least one tubular bar 15 positioned above the level of the firegrate (not shown). Water for central heating enters a side cheek near the bottom and some passes up into a space enclosed by a baffle 16 and through the bar or bars 15 to an open-topped space enclosed by a baffle 17. The unit may also have a rear water-space 4 or a top water-space 5 or both and there may be an opening 9, Fig. 4, through the rear space 4 or a side cheek 2 to accommodate a separate fireback boiler. The water bars 15 are bowed outwardly and downwardly. A flue 10 extends from the top middle portion of the rear waterspace 4 and contains a damper 11 controlled by a lever and rod, Figs. 1, 3 (not shown). The unit may be fitted in a fireplace with underfloor draught. It may have a detachable cast front, Fig. 1 (not shown), covering the front faces of the water cheeks 2 and the top waterspace 5 but having an air control device in a removable fret and a front opening with a sliding door or doors or a hinged door or doors, the last having a baffle plate on the rear face but being removable, interchangeable, and reversible, to expose an enamelled front face when open. The top of this detachable front may have weakened lines for adjusting the height to a fireplace.
