Class 126 In a domestic stove or fireplace the combustion gas flow to the chimney is controlled by providing at the back of the firespace an associated damper plate and forwardly inclined removable rear grate member through which the combustion gases are compelled to flow on their way to the chimney. In the embodiment shown a fireplace comprising the usual fireback 10, side cheeks 11, grate 13, front 16, and ash box 17 is provided witt a grid like metal or refractory member 19 which rests, at its lower edge, in grooves 18 formed at the rear of the grate 13, and at its upper edge, against a heat radiating member 24 which is inclined rearwardly and downwardly from the top of the fireplace frame 12 and which forms with the fireback 10 a flue 26 leading into the chimney 27. Control of the gas flow through the member 19 is effected by a tiltable damper plate 22, which is disposed behind the member 19 resting at its lower edge in lugs 21, which are formed on the rear side lower edge of the member. The damper plate is tiltable between limiting positions of either rest alongside the member 19 or rest against the fireback 10 by a rod 23 which is connected to the damper at its upper edge. The heat radiating member 24, which is preferably a plate of polished metal, is formed with side cheeks 25 and it may be provided on its rear face with fins 29. The member 19 may be formed of separate renewable sections and the fireplace may be used for heating a hot water system when suitably modified. According to the first Provisional Specification a fuel hopper may be provided within the upper part of the fireplace the feed therefrom being controlled by a movable plate or the like. In an embodiment described in the second Provisional Specification there is no rear grate member complete combustion of the fuel being aided by the provision of auxiliary flues which extend from points below the normal level of the fuel to an outlet in the main chimney above the level of the fuel. They may open into a smoke box provided with a damper controlled from the front of the fireplace. The flues may be used to heat a boiler or an oven. The reflector plate may be connected to another plate disposed within the fireplace surround and provided with air channels to serve as a convector heater. The grate may comprise removable or rockable firebars. Gas flow in the space behind the reflector may be controlled by a damper which may be incorporated with the auxiliary flue damper.
