Class 126 A cooking stove, operable with direct or down draught, comprises a firebox separated from two ovens by a transverse partition. a flue leading from the upper part of the firebox to an upper chimney outlet above the main oven, and a second flue leading from the top of the ashpit below the grate, between the upper main oven and a lower auxiliary oven, up the side of the main oven to the chimney .outlet, and dampers for controlling the flow of gases through the flues. Under direct or up draught conditions, primary air is admitted to the ash pit by opening a damper 20, and the products of combustion pass out of the top of the firebox past an open damper 40, either round a baffle 51 to an upper chimney outlet 38, or, if a damper 52 is closed, down the side of the main oven 21, between the ovens 21, 22 to,a lower chimney outlet 34. Secondary air is supplied at the inlet to the top oven flue by the hollow axle 41 of the damper 40. For down draught operation, the air inlet damper 20, and flue damper 40 are closed, cutting off the air supply through hollow axle 41, and an air inlet damper 19 at the top of the firebox, the damper 16 controlling a secondary air inlet 14 to a " combustion nozzle " 11 beneath the grate, and a flue inlet damper 26 are opened. According to the position of damper 52 in the upper flue passage, the combustion products pass through the baffled flue passage between the upper and lower ovens 21, 22 to the lower chimney outlet 34, or the main part of the hot gases flows between the ovens, up the side of the main oven 21, to the upper flue outlet 38. A baffle 25 below the outlet from the ashpit to the flue directs the combustion gases emerging - from the " combustion nozzle " 11. The down draught dampers 16, 19 and 26 are connected by linkages to a common operating handle 30, Fig. 6, mounted at the back of the stove, and a second operating handle 49 controls the updraught dampers 20 and 40. The arrangement may be such that the air inlet damper 19 at the top of the firebox is not completely closed when the dampers 16 and 26 are closed, so that a small amount of secondary air enters the top of the firebox when the stove is operating by up draught. A third handle 54 controls the damper 52 controlling the flow of gases in baffled stop flue. A boiler 56, Fig. 5, with a central passage 57 may be mounted at the front of the firebox so that, under up draught conditions, hot gases flow up the central boiler flue 57 to an outlet 57a, Fig. 6, to the top oven flue, while under down draught conditions, the rear face only of the boiler is heated.
