A kitchen range comprises a combustion chamber, an outlet flue and water heater or steam generator housed in a heating chamber separated from the rest of the range but communicating with the combustion chamber at the top through a duct, a uniformly apertured hit and miss damper extending across the bottom of the heating chamber and controlling communication between the chamber and the outlet flue, and horizontal tubes forming the water heater are evenly distributed in the chamber to be heated by the downward flow of hot gases when the damper is opened. Horizontal water tubes 38, Fig. 2, uniformly fill a heating space 6 separated from the ovens 1, 2, Fig. 1, by a partition provided with a flap damper 23 at the top so that the space 6 may be cut off from the combustion chamber. The space 6 communicates with an outlet flue 37 through a uniformly apertured hit-and-miss damper 20, 21 extending across the bottom of the space, and a hit-and-miss damper 24, 25 is interposed between the outlet flue and the ovens 1, 2. The water tubes 38 are connected to vertical headers 12, 13 leading to top and bottom headers 33, 34 which may be divided to form. two separate water-heaters. A secondary air passage 29, Fig. 4, leads from the ashpit 30 to a hit-and-miss damper at the back of the fireplace, and further secondary air is supplied through slots in the inner stoking door 43. Sliding plates 27 are provided to cut off the grate 26 from the ashpit 30. The secondary air supply openings are dimensioned so as to cause flames to sweep all the tubes of the water heater. A window (not shown) is provided in the side wall of the range so that the optimum settings of the dampers may be determined.
