[Class 64(i)] A back boiler 1 for a domestic solid fuel stove or fireplace has fins 4 projecting from the upper part and is plain on the lower part of its front surface. A plate 6 is detachably secured adjacent the fins and defines, with the fins, ducts for the passage of combustion products over the finned surface of the boiler. A damper is provided to control the passage of the combustion products through the ducts. The detachable plate 6 is provided with hooks 7 which engage on pegs 5 on the boiler and is notched for the attachment of a detachable gas heating appliance which may be used instead of solid fuel. In the form shown in Fig. 3 the damper 10 is pivotally mounted on the detachable plate 6, in bearings 9, which project over the top edge of the plate so that the ducts cannot be fully closed. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 4, the damper 10<SP>1</SP> is slidably mounted between guides 12 on the top of the boiler, the damper operating handle 11' passing through a slotted guide plate 13. When using solid fuel the operating handle remains in the vertical arm 14 of the slotted plate. When using the gas heating appliance the operating handle is moved into the arm 15 of the slotted plate and consequently is tilted so that the ducts cannot be fully closed. The finned surface on the boiler may alternatively comprise staggered short fins to provide tortuous flue passages. According to the Provisional Specification the depth of the flue passages may decrease progressively upwardly. Specifications 539,010, 578,796 and 609,497, [all in Group XI], are referred to.
