Abstract

1,008,428. Space heating apparatus; heating air for combustion. BRITISH ANTHRACITE CO. Ltd. Dec. 6, 1963 [Dec. 4, 1962], No. 45776/62. Headings F4S and F4W. An air heater for space heating comprises a heat exchanger in the form of a box 16 located behind the fireback and/or at the sides of a domestic open fire or closed stove, the heat exchanger having air supply and discharge ducts 10, 11 extending over at least half its height and having internal fins 20 of echelon, pin or other form to turbulate the air forced therethrough by a blower 22, and on its front face (i.e. that nearest the fire) other fins 17. The continuous-burning domestic fireplace shown includes a back boiler 14. The flow of hot gases from the fire over the boiler and over the air heater fins 17 is regulated by a handoperated damper 19. The fan motor may be actuated by hand or thermostatically. The incoming air may pass over a tray containing water or dilute deodorant. Combustion air for the fire is bled off from the box 16 through apertures 21.
