Abstract

999,335. Hot-water boilers; heating air; fireplaces. W. RUEGG. March 29, 1962 [March 29, 1961], No. 12162/62. Headings F4A; F4S and F4W. In a fireplace having a sloping rear wall and a closure element of transparent heat-resistant material for regulating the extent of the front opening of the fireplace, a metallic heat exchanger overlying the sloping rear wall is provided for heating water or air. As shown in Fig. 1, a hot-water boiler comprising rear and front portions 11a 11c joined by side portions (Fig. 2, not shown) is located with the portion 11a spaced from the sloping rear wall of the fireplace to define a rear flue 13. Two transparent plates 15a, 15b are provided, the latter being vertically movable to control the air supply through the front of the fireplace. An oil burner 5, which may be replaced by a grate, is suspended in an opening in the rear of the hearth and an adjustable damper 14 at the top of the boiler serves to deflect some of the rising combustion gases towards the boiler portion 11c. In the embodiment of Fig. 5 the front boiler portion 11f is of inverted L-shape and is spaced from the front wall of the housing to define a flue 13b, an arcuate damper 14a being pivoted on boiler portion 11f as shown. The side portions 11 of the boiler are connected by tubes 11h, the transparent closure element 15a is pivotable and removable and the entire boiler unit is removably mounted on brackets 18. The front of the hearth 2 is recessed to burn wood and an oil burner 5 is again provided, a cover 19 being movable to cover either the recess or burner as desired. In the embodiment of Fig. 6 a finned metal wall 20 is spaced from the sloping rear wall of the fireplace to define an air heating passage 21, air being supplied to the passage and to the burner 5 from a duct 22 including a fan 23. Air distribution ducts to the room (not shown) are provided. A grate 5a and a single verticallymovable transparent panel are provided. The closure plates may be horizontally adjustable or pivotable about a vertical axis.
