[Also in Group XIII] A stove or fireplace comprises a metal casing with a recess for a gas fire and forming in its interior a single tortuous path for the combustion products from the gas fire extending from an inlet at the upper part of the recess, on either side of and above the recess to an outlet to the chimney. A hollow casing has a recess 2 in the lower front part in which a gas fire 3 is installed. A combustion products passage 5 leads from the open top of the recess 2 by a tortuous path having several right angle bends and surrounding the recess at the top and sides to an outlet 11. Air heating ducts 7 separate the parts of the passage 5 and run parallel to the passage 5 from the air inlets 8 to the central outlet 9. Heat retaining material 10, such as broken firebrick, is supported by a grid above the recess 2. The air heating ducts may cross the flue passages instead of running parallel with them, and the gas fire may be a separate unit, or a permanent fixture in the recess. The passages 5 may be wholly filled with pieces of heat retaining material.
