[Also in Group XIII] In a gas fire having a convection air heat exchanger 5 associated therewith, and which includes a casing 1 with a translucent front panel 2 of heat resisting glass, and a firebrick backing 3 in front of which is an open-work radiating element 4, combustion air for the burners 12 is supplied through a separate passage which communicates at both ends with the flue or other space into which the burner gases are discharged. This arrangement it is stated promotes a substantially constant flow of combustion air to the burners. In all the forms of apparatus described, room air entering the apparatus at 17 is caused to flow by convection over the heat exchanger 5 and is thereby heated before passing out through a perforated front panel 10. The form of apparatus shown is for use with a balanced flue in which the combustion air inlet 15 and burner gases outlet 8 are adjacent. Combustion air flows from the inlet 15 down the passage 14 to a duct 16 leading to the burners 12 from which the burner gases flow upwardly through the heat exchanger 5 to the flue 8. Combustion air may also enter the duct 16 through an opening in the wall of the duct 14, Fig. 1 (not shown). In a further form described, Fig. 2 (not shown), the duct 16 is extended to form the only combustion air inlet the passage 14 and inlet 15 then being sealed off. The construction may be such that a single apparatus is readily adaptable for entry of the combustion air in accordance with any one of the embodiments described above.
