Abstract
927,850. Solid fuel stoves. C. A. V. SMITH. Aug. 11, 1961 [May 12, 1960], No. 16859/60. Class 126. A stove or fireplace is provided with hobs 37 and 38 on either side of a grate 27 and a fret 39 detachably mounted on the hobs and engaging the hobs, grate, and a lower front wall 6 of the fireplace so that combustion air has to pass through apertures 40 in the fret before rising through the grate. The size of the apertures is adjustable by means of a sliding plate 49 operated by a knob 50. The stove has an outer sheet metal casing comprising a bottom plate 4, shallow side and front walls 5 and 6 flared outwards and continued by inwardly inclined walls 7 and 8, and more steeply inclined walls 9 and 10 rising to the top of a back plate 11 which carries a flue outlet 1. The front wall 8 has a large opening 8a surrounded by a narrow flange 8b of the casing. The stove is supported above the floor of the room by two brackets 12 bolted at 13 to the wall of the room and at 14 to the back plate 11. Alternatively the brackets 12 may be bolted to the bottom plate 4 at 16 thus supporting the stove on the floor of the room. The fret 39 is held in position by two forward flanges 41 and 46 engaging the surround of the opening 8a and an upwardly turned rear portion 43 having a flange 44 which rests against a raised portion 45 of the grate. A gas burner for igniting fuel on the grate, Fig. 8 (not shown), extends horizontally between the raised portion 45 of the grate and the portion 43 of the fret and communicates with a vertical bore in a tapered plug mounted to swivel in a tapered bore in a tube extending through the hob 38, see Fig. 9 (not shown). On removal of the fret the burner may be swung forward to give access to the grate for cleaning, or may be removed if not required. A refractory fireback 30 and cheeks 31 are provided, the cheeks having buttresses 32 which are of such a shape that they mate with the sheet metal casing and triangular section portions 34 conforming to the sides of the grate and bevelled at their upper ends, see Fig. 7 (not shown). A fireclay lining 36 is interposed between the firebrick structure and the sheet metal casing. The inner end of the flue outlet 1 is cut off in two planes 21 and 22 and a damper plate 23 pivoted in a bracket 25 can be moved to and from a closed position in which it lies against the plane 21. The mechanism for adjusting the damper is illustrated in Fig. 12 (not shown) and comprises a cranked rod which may be turned to sweep over the back of the damper plate 23 to raise and lower it. A flue 2 is provided in the wall of the room and is joined to the flue 1 by a loose sleeve 17, this connection being shielded by a canopy 20 of the wall flue 2. The stove may be used for burning logs by removing the fret 39 and grate 27 and if desired the ashpan 29 and firebrick structure 30, 31 and placing andirons, Fig. 11 (not shown), in the stove. In a modification, Fig. 13 (not shown), the firebrick structure 30, 31 is replaced by flat firebrick back and cheeks with the addition of wedge-shaped cheeks, the ash pan is shovel shaped and rests on a bottom tray which in turn rests on the stove bottom and the vents 40 in the fret are adjusted by separate sliding plates.
