[Class 126] A hopper-fed up-draught open fireplace for, burning coke is fitted with a one-piece grate consisting of a rear sloping part 13 forming a continuation of the back wall of the hopper 8, a horizontal bottom 14 and a vertical front 15, the arrangement being such that the plane passing through the upper edge of the front 15 and the front edge of the hopper outlet is approximately 45 degrees to the horizontal, i.e. the angle of repose of the coke. The undersides of the rear and bottom grate sections 13, 14 are formed with fins 22 which serve to heat the combustion air entering the ashpit through a regulator 16 in the front fret. The hopper has two stoking doors 9, 10 to enable it to be charged from inside or outside the room ; similarly a door 12 permits ashes to be cleared from outside if desired. A slide 21 controls the outlet of the hopper, the sloping front wall of which carries a boiler 28 formed with fins 29. A second boiler 30 may be arranged behind the fire and ashpit. The gases escape to the chimney 25 through flues 24 disposed on each side of the hopper while the roof 26 of the latter is provided with a hit- and-miss valve 27 to permit escape of vapours direct to the chimney. Two fireplaces may be arranged back-to-back in a partition wall or the fireplace may be incorporated in a combination cooking range.
