743,388. Fireplaces. RADIATION, Ltd. Oct. 22, 1954 [Nov. 27, 1953], No. 32958/53. Class 126. An open down-draught fireplace comprises a combustion products flue with metal walls adapted to heat air or air and water, means for supplying secondary air to the flue entrance, and dampers controlling the updraught passage to the chimney and the flue. Secondary air is fed through a passage between a plate h and a back-boiler d to entrance to a flue e between the bottom of the boiler and the solid rear part of the grate b. The metal rear wall of the back flue f is provided with ribs j to heat the ambient air. The back flue f is controlled by a slidable damper m carrying lugs s engaging a manually operated crank r. A pivoted damper p controls the updraught passage, and is so counterweighted that it is always in contact with a member t secured to the sliding damper m. The grate b may be drawn forwards to leave a gap at the base of the back flue f. The boiler d may be replaced by a heater for air from the room in which the fireplace is installed or an adjacent room.
