Class 126 A member adapted to be mounted adjacent to the back of an open solid fuel grate forms therewith a combustion products passage with its entrance below the normal fuel level and a second, smaller secondary air passage is formed in front of and adjacent to the lower end of the first passage, an adjustable means in front of and adjacent to the upper end of the member forming therewith an outlet for air from the room and gases rising from the fuel bed. A back plate a is adapted for mounting in front of and parallel with the back of a grate, which may be formed by a water boiler b. The lower edge of this plate is below the normal upper level of the fuel bed, and it forms a combustion products passage with the rear of the grate. In front of and at the lower part of the back plate a is a smaller plate f which forms a passage leading secondary air and some of the gases rising from the surface of the fuel downwardly. A third plate h is hinged at its upper edge to the front of the fireplace so that its lower edge forms, with the upper part of back plate a, an adjustable outlet to the chimney. A damper i, controlling the combustion products passage, is connected to the plate h so that increase of the outlet to the chimney is accompanied by a restriction of the combustion products passage. A second combustion products passage is formed behind the boiler b, and this passage may also be controlled by the damper i.
