Abstract
700,932. Open fireplaces. TUOHY, P. J. June 5, 1951, No. 13363/51. Class 126. In a boiler and boiler flue construction for use with open fireplaces the back and sides of the flue, the boiler supports and the skirting base are cast in metal as an integral unit, the flue back itself being shaped similarly to the bottom, rear and adjacent portion of the top of a semi-elliptically shaped boiler, constituting therewith a curved flue hugging the boiler for the major surface portion thereof. As shown the flue back 4, sides 4a, and skirting base 4b are cast integrally, the sides being rebated at 2a in order to support a boiler 1. A curved plate 5 extending between the sides continues the curved flue 2 around the top portion of the boiler leaving a throat 5b connecting the flue 2 with the main flue 6. The front of the integral unit is closed by cover plates 12, 19, the former being provided with an opening 11 which is normally closed by a door 15. The combustion gases from the fireplace are caused to flow through the boiler via ducts 3 as well as round the boiler through the flue 2. Flow of combustion gases up the flue 6 to the chimney is controlled by a sliding plate damper 16. The back 4 and sides 4a of the flue 2, below about the position where the plate 5 is fitted to the back 4 are preferably cast in a heavier gauge metal than the rest of the unit.
