In an underfloor draught domestic fireplace, a receptacle a to which air is admitted, extends backwards from its upper end where a frame b supports a firegrate h to its lower end so that it lies substantially within the chimney breast or wall structure d of the room e in which the fireplace is located. Air entering the receptacle a through a valve-controlled inlet j operated by a rod m passes round an ashbox f, of similar shape to the receptacle a, and through apertures i in the ashbox to the firegrate h. A midfeather plate n extends from side to side of the ashbox and deflects ash to the rear of the box and the ashbox is suspended by means of a flange p on a ledge g on which the firegrate h which has a raised portion rests.
