A baffle for controlling the flow of hot gases from an open fireplace into a chimney comprises a self-supporting and removable fitting arranged between the top of the fireback and the chimney. The fitting comprises a central portion A of inverted channel section with upwardly directed portions at either side. Brackets S engage the side cheeks of the fireplace and support the fitting, which has a rear part H extending above and spaced from the back wall of the fireplace. The fitting may be of metal or other material, and the cross-section may be angular or curved.
