Abstract
722,460. Domestic fireplaces. FLORENCE, C. P., and RICHARDSON, A. May 21, 1953 [July 28, 1952; Oct. 15, 1952], Nos. 18995/52 and 25850/52. Class 126 A baffle adapted to be fitted to a fireplace so as to restrict the cross-sectional area of chimney throat has a curved forward edge to minimize turbulence in the flow to the chimney. A baffle 5 formed of firebrick or metal, Fig. 1, rests on a ledge 6 formed at the top of the forwardly inclined portion of the fireback 7 and forms a continuation of it. The forward top portions 8 of projections formed on the baffle rest against the inside of the top arch of the fireplace. An opening 11 is provided so that the baffle 5 may be lifted out with a poker. The baffle may be fixed to the fireback and cheeks, or rest in grooves in the cheeks. In a modification, Fig. 3, the baffle comprises a main plate 13, and an extension plate 14, secured together by screws 17 co-operating with slots in the main plate 13. Screws 15 passing through side flanges 16 of the main plate enable it to be secured in place. Spring-loaded pins may replace the screws 15. The baffles are set in the fireplace at an angle of approximately 60 degrees to the horizontal, and the rounded edges over which the combustion products flow are spaced about 2 inches from the fire front to provide a flow area of 20 sq. in. or less.
