Abstract

335,255. Kempton, C. H., and Bissell, W. June 21, 1929. Grates; open fireplaces; lighting fires.-In fireplaces for consuming coke and like fuel, and provided with gas igniting means, the bottom grate is mounted near the front on pivots 2 and comprises rearwardly projecting prongs 1 which, when the grate is rocked, pass between prongs 7 projecting forwardly from a bar 8 secured to the lower edge of a rearwardly inclined firebrick slab 9. Some of the prongs 1 may have rearward extensions 11 which pass through holes 12 in the slab 9 when the grate is rocked. A back flue 14 may be provided, to which the gases pass by an aperture 13 above the slab 9. A slot 21 may be formed in the side of the grate., above the slab 9, for the passage of additional air. The gas burner for igniting the fuel may be formed by a hollow lower front grate bar 16, above which is a solid bar 15 with an air inlet space 17 between them. Specification 314,692 is referred to.
