Open fireplaces; grates; lighting fires; outlets to chimneys.-A coke-burning fireplace for fitting into a normal fireplace opening comprises a front frame d, preferably made to one of a number of standard heights and widths so that it will fit against the metal framing or surround of the ordinary firegrate front, together with a threepanel back portion preferably cast in one piece, and comprising a rear panel e<1> and side panels e<2> made somewhat smaller than the interior dimensions of the fireplace. In the construction shown, the back e<1> is forwardly curved at the top to clear the sloping back wall b, and is connected to an inclined flue plate e<4> carrying a flange f to which a length of flue-pipe f<1> is attached. The bottom grate comprises rearwardly sloping bars h and short inclined bars h<1> at the rear of them, with a space between the two sets for the discharge of ashes. The two sets of bars form an integral casting, having a flange h<2> supported on a ledge e'; alternatively, the grate may be supported on legs. A basket-like front grate l is removably held in position by hooks l<1> and projections d<3>, d<2>, which latter projections also support the bottom grate. A horizontal gas lighting-burner k is provided, which may be replaced by a burner k<4> supported on the rear of a separate front heater m of the kind described in Specification 278,115.
