366,156. Open fireplaces. CHEYNE, W., Prestonville, Waikiwi, near Invercargill, Southland, New Zealand. Nov. 6, 1930, No. 33435. Convention date, Jan. 14. [Class 126.] A fireplace of the type in which a quarter-spherical hood 5 is pivoted at each side at the level of a circular dishshaped grate 4 so as to be movable to cut off the fire from, o r expose it to, the room, comprises a frame consisting of an upper arch-shaped portion 1 and a lower semicircular part 1b on which the grate is supported, the hood being pivoted in lugs 4A on the grate and moving in the semicircular arch of the frame. The hood shown can be adjusted by means of a rack 5B and pawl 5c to vary the opening beneath the rear edge through which the gases pass to the flue. The grate 4 rests on ledges 1A and 1c respectively on the ashpan front 7 and the part 1b of the frame. A curved metal plate 8 in the rear part of the grate acts as a heat-reflector, and a pipe coil 9 arranged in the grate serves to heat water.
