379,418. Open fireplaces. HALES, J. S., Fuel Research Station, Blackwall Lane, East Greenwich, London. June 11, 1931, Nos. 16991 and 31780. [Class 126.] Reflectors.-A readily removable false back 7 which forms a rear flue 10 in an open fireplace is formed with spacing members or side cheeks 8, 9 extending from its sides to the front of the fireplace. Securing means may be provided on the side cheeks, or they may hold the device in position by frictional engagement with the fireplace. The upper extremity of the back may be adjacent the bottom of a canopy, which may have associated draught-controlling means, or an adjustable canopy may be included in the false back. Alternatively, a " hit-and-miss " or other form of draught regulator may be provided near the top of the back. The lowermost extremity of the back may be adjustable in relation to the fuel; for example by slidably mounting the back in guides, or by hinging it to the grate, or by means of a separate adjustable bottom plate. The back may be formed of polished sheet metal, for example aluminium, stainless steel, or chromium-plated steel, in order to serve as a heat reflector, and the lower part may be protected by a sheet of other metal on the rear side, with or without an insulating layer or air space between.
