DOMESTIC FIREPLACE.
Application filed December 2, 1925, Serial No. 72,884, and in Great Britain December 4, 1924.
This invention relates to domestic fireplaces, and has for its object to provide an improved construct-ion thereof, particularly adapted for burning coke and anthracite, and
equally suitable for burning coal, wood, peat, etc, and tending to the abatement of smoke.
According to the present invention I pro vide an open fireplace wherein the rear portion of the fuel is supported. upon a perforate grate, and the fuel. in front for a large proportion of say to 50 of the total. fireplace area rests upon a raised plate or support beneath which an air passage is provided opening into the rear portion of the fireplace,
the arrangemen being such that the front portion of the fire on the raised plate or support heats the air passing through the air passage beneath and entering the fire through the rear portion of the fuel.
My invention consists of a fireplace constructed and arranged all as hereinafter more particularly described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which i Fig. 1 represents my fireplace in vertical cross section, and
Fig. 2 is front elevation thereof.
Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different views.
The imperforate plate I) which sup-ports the front portion of the fire and the open grate or fire bars f which supports the rear portion of the fire are arranged in substantial alignment at a suitable angle. I
The open grid or fire bars f are fitted so as to slide beneath the imperforate frontplate bso that the grate may be adjusted to suit requirements.
The front plate 12 in this arrangement extends for substantially 25% of the fireplace area and beneath said plate and the grid or fire bars 7 is arranged a lower plate Z)? supported by distance pieces from the imperforate front plate I).
The improved construction can be adapted to any existing ope firqplace, or domestic stove or range, as to secure more complete con'ibustion and the reduction oi smoke to a minimum.
If desired a complete open fire place, portable or otherwise, or a. kitchen range grate may be provided ii'icorporatii my invention, or the invention may be applicd'to furnaces, boilers and the like withoutnecessitating the use of force draught.
Amongst other advantages the present in vention introduces features by which a greatly inign'o'vcal' combus n is obtained. Frontal draught only is brought to hear at all depths fr in back to front of he lire. The lire is caused to burn at two levels, al air drawn in warmed and d1 from the fire on the higher front. Also the loss of heat which occu s with. the usual fires supported on an open grate, due to the hot dust and ashes automatically falling through the is avoided. v
hat I claim as my inventi. n and desire to secure by Letters Patent i In an open fire1...e the combination with the fireplace side walls and hearth, of a grate including a fuel supporting rate front plate raised above the rear said grate ezrtendn a the width of to place to the side walls thereof and being po tioned. in spaced relation to the hearth where by an air supply passage to the rear portion of the grate is constituted by the hearth, lircplace side 1 walls and underlie? h. face 0 front portion of the grate, said pa having an unrestricted opening permitting the air entering therethrough to impinge up the said underneath face of the front portion of the grate.
