Open fireplaces; grates.- The firebrick base and back of a barless grate are both formed with corrugations c, those on the back being covered by a shield d, the rear face of which is correspondingly corrugated so as to form air flues, from the top of which air is supplied to the gases rising from the fire. The shield, which is preferably removable for cleaning purposes, is formed with a front face also corrugated, and with side wings g resting on the base. The front of the base projects forward into the hearth, and is provided with a ridge j to retain ashes.
