Abstract
593,093. Open fireplaces. KILBURN, F. April 20, 1945, No. 9941. [Class 126] In a domestic fireplace of the kind in which the fuel is contained in an openwork combustion chamber B, situated in front of a reflector A the bottom of the chamber rests in a recess formed in a casting C which forms an ash-box and fixed to or rests upon the hearth and is provided with a drawer or removable front D for the removal of the ashes. The horizontal bars of the grid have downwardly sloping inner surfaces to prevent ashes passing through them and in addition, the top of the ash-box is dished and formed with apertures so that any ashes that do pass through the grid fall through into the ash-box. The top of the combustion chamber is enclosed within a cover, fitted at the front with a fuelling door F and terminating in a short pipe which passes through a plate H detachably fixed in the top of the chimney recess. A space is left between the top of the combustion chamber and the bottom of the cover so as to provide an increased draught. In a modified construction the combustion chamber is in the form of an open-fronted firegrate and the reflector is used in conjunction with a standard household chimney.
