742,936. Firegrates. SMITH, D. Jan. 7, 1954 [Jan. 19, 1953], No. 1458/53. Class 126. A firegrate of the kind which can be placed in an existing fireplace to enable slow combustion of the fuel to be obtained at will is associated with a part having an open bottom, imperforate back and side walls and a front wall, which, with the aid of the floor of the fireplace, prevent air from reaching the underside of the firegrate accidentally. A grate 1 is supported by lugs 6 in a frame 2 having a raised front 5 to retain fuel on the grate. The frame 2 rests on a plinth 3 having a solid back and sides, and a separate front 4 with a hit and miss damper 16 enables the air supply below the grate to be controlled. A stepped lug 8 at the front of the frame 2 engages a notch in front of the grate 1 and prevents the front 4 being pushed too far in. Lugs 13 on the plinth 3 locates the frame 2 on the plinth to which it may be secured by screws.
