Abstract
718,055. Fireplaces. CARRON CO., and PHILIP, A. R. Feb. 16, 1953, [March 5, 1952.] No. 5742/52. Class 126. The upper portion 3 of the back wall 2 of a fireplace is inclined upwardly and towards the front at an inclination of not less than 40 degrees to the vertical. A removable canopy 4, suspended from fireplace frame means 1, is normally adapted to partially mask an opening to the chimney which is bounded above and below by horizontal portion 7 of frame means 1 and by the knee 8 of portion 3 respectively, the distance between the extreme forward point of knee 8 and the rear edge of portion 7 exceeding three and a half inches. In the closed position of the canopy a slot having a width of less than two inches is left between the knee and the bottom edge of the canopy. A fire-brick 9, having its under face 10 at the level of the grate I and its rear face 12 in the same vertical plane as the front wall of the frame means 1, is supported in the front of the fireplace. The dimension of the fire-box from brick face 12 to wall 2 exceeds nine inches. If desired, a part of the lower portion of wall 2 and all of, or a part of, the portion 3 may be constituted by a boiler 13. When the latter is fitted a damper controlled flue 14 is provided. The back and side walls of the fireplace may be constructed as a unit, the inner boundary of which, in plan, is either hemi-hexagonal or parabolic.
