A closed solid fuel continuous burning stove comprises a vertical grate 5, having bars secured at their upper ends only, which is located in a frame 4 mounted on the breast of the stove and is spaced vertically above a horizontal grate 14 which itself forms a trough 16 with downwardlyprojecting frusto-conical walls 15 of an ashbox 33, said vertical grate forming the only means admitting combustion air to the fire zone of the stove. The ash door 3 and feed door 26 are hermetically sealed and ashes contained by the trough restrict any downward air leakage from the vertical grate, the combustion air passes horizontally through the localized fire zone a, b, c, d, through apertures 6 in an inner rear wall 7 opposite the vertical grate, into a collector space 11 and flue 12. A mica or heat-resistant glass window 32 and an adjustable air inlet 31 is located in the frame, additional combustion control being provided by collector space apertures 28. Alternatively, the vertical grate may be open, air admission being controlled by means in the flue or collector space.
