627,257. Fireplaces. HADEN & SONS, Ltd., G. N., and BRUCE, H. H. July 26, 1946, No. 22351. [Class 126] The base 4 and walls 3, 6 of the fuel bed of a solid-fuel fireplace containing a water boiler 9 are lined with refractory heatinsulating material except for openings 8, 14 in the vicinity of the base for the egress of combustion products to a flue 7 which leads directly from the fuel bed and contains the boiler, and for the admission of air to the fuel bed, and refractory heatinsulating material also extends upwardly as an upstanding wall 2 from the top of the front of the base 4. Air from an inlet 11 enters the fuel bed through a slot below a sloping shelf 12. The panel 15 is removable for kindling and de-ashing. For room heating, fuel may also be burnt in front of the wall 2. In a modification, the air inlet is provided at the bottom of the front wall 2 instead of at the rear, the shelf 12 is omitted, and the opening between the partition 5 and the top of the wall 2 can be closed by a refractory cover pivotable about its lower edge. The Provisional Specification describes also grooving one or more of the walls of the combustion chamber to facilitate the supply of air for combustion.
