[Class 51 (i)] In a furnace provided with a travelling grate stoker, a vertically sliding door for regulating the depth of the fuel on the grate is provided with one or more ducts through which combustion products are withdrawn from the front of the furnace beneath a refractory arch so as to sweep the surface of the fuel bed. The travelling grate is arranged in the flue of a Lancashire boiler provided with a refractory arch 5 which is continued at 62, 63 into an extension 50 of the furnace flue. A vertically sliding door 78 arranged in a chamber having metal walls 59, 64 between the furnace and fuel hopper 52 is provided with ducts 83 formed in the refractory lining of the door, the lower ends of the ducts communicating with the furnace just above the level of the surface of the fuel bed and the upper ends communicating with the upper part of the chamber 58 which is in communication with the chimney flue or the suction side of a fan. The extension 50 of the furnace is provided with a flange 55 carrying bolts 53 engaging with a channel member 54 secured to the front of the boiler. The grate frame is closed at the bottom and sides to provide an air chamber extending between front and rear end plates to which air is supplied and the air supplied to the front and rear of the grate is regulated by sliding hit and miss dampers 29, arranged beneath grids 12.
