Abstract

506,018. Feeding fuel; grates; supplying air for combustion. FELLOWS, J. R. Nov. 22, 1937, No. 32123. Convention.date, Dec. 19, 1936. [Class 51 (i)] In a steam-boiler, water-boiler, air-heating, or other furnace with a grate 12, a coal-charging housing C with an opening to receive coal, closed top, side, and rear walls 28, 29, and a bottom opening to permit coal to discharge downwardly therefrom, is supported by, and extends through an opening in, the side wall of the combustion chamber 14, and a coal spreader in the form of an auxiliary grate A is arranged below the housing C and is shaped to guide the coal from the housing outwardly towards the side walls of the combustion chamber. Air for combustion is drawn from outside the furnace through an opening in the door 10 closing the coal receiving opening, and through the coal in the housing C to the combustion zone. In the air-heating furnace shown, the charging housing extends through, and is sealed in, a neck 9 connecting the outer wall 15 of the air-heating jacket with the wall of the combustion chamber. The auxiliary grate is supported by an arm B. The upper surface of the auxiliary grate slopes downwardly and outwardly on three sides. The housing C has a spaced inner lining 24, 25 forming a passage 30 for air for combustion. An inner smoke door 21 with a slot for the passage of a poker is pivoted to brackets 20 on the arm B. The lower edges of the lining 24, 25 are protected by refractory blocks 26. In another form, Fig. 7, the charging housing has its side walls in the form of water chambers 31 protected by refractory blocks 32. Alternatively,. a single-walled housing may be used, having its lower edge turned outwardly to form a channel supporting a water-pipe.
