Class 51(i) A solid-fuel furnace of the type consisting of a vertical combustion chamber 2 into which the fuel is delivered through the top, the ashes and slag being discharged through the bottom, is characterized by the provision of an apertured vertical entry wall 5 through which primary air is introduced, an apertured discharge wall 6 of greater depth opposite the entry wall and disposed with its lower end extending below the level of the lower edge of the entry wall, an inclined grate 7 through which primary air is also introduced, a slag pusher 8 for discharging slag from the combustion chamber through a gap under the entry wall and a device 21 for adding secondary air to the combustion gases discharged through the wall 6. The apertured walls. 5 and 6 are constituted by a multiplicity of watercooled vertical pipes. Specifications 698,098, 698,099 and 698,100 are referred to.
