Abstract

235,952. English Electric Co., Ltd., and Silk, P. B. March 25, 1924. Pulverulent, liquid, and gaseous fuel furnaces.-In a boiler or other furnace fired by pulverized coal (or by oil or gas), damage to the walls and slagging of ash is prevented bv the introduction of cool flue gases through apertures 9 spaced over an inner wall of the combustion chamber, Fig. 2, or at a low level in the combustion chamber. The total quantity of flue gas returned is controlled, jointly or separately, by the bye-pass and main dampers 11, 12 of the fan 6, and in the first form the individual apertures 9 are also controlled by dampers 10. The furnace illustrated is fired by downwardly directed coal-dust burners 2. The dampers 10 may be operated by a toothed curved rack as shown in Fig. 4, or by a screwed spindle and hand-wheel, and they may be conical instead of as shown. In the second form of furnace the hollow wall is used for the supply of heated secondary air.
