[Also in Group XIII] Fuel which is not readily inflammable is burnt in an inclined trough grate formed of water tubes connected into the circulation of a steam generator, and more inflammable fuel is burnt on a travelling grate fed separately and passing below the open lower end of the trough grate. Low-grade fuel, such as refuse, is fed to a trough grate 1 formed of water tubes from a hopper 10 in amounts regulated by flap 11, and higher grade fuel from hopper 12 passes to a travelling grate 3 by a shoot 13 extending below the trough grate 1. The partly burnt fuel from grate 1 falls on to the burning fuel on the travelling grate 3, which is inclined upwardly to its discharge end. The slope of the grate 3 is varied by a screw 25 which swings the grate 3 about a horizontal shaft 26 to regulate the depth of fuel on the grate. An air blast nozzle 24 draws the combustion products up the grate 1 below a baffle 20 to a secondary combustion chamber 17 above a trough-shaped baffle 14 supported on tubes 15 bent out from the furnace walls. Openings .in the baffle 14 allow dust to fall on to the grate 3 and an auxiliary oil burner 38 may be mounted above the baffle. The convection pass 31 is lined with water pipes 34 traversed by flue tubes 33.
