A combustion apparatus for a furnace or boiler burning solid fuel having a high volatile matter content, has ducts 20 leading from above a degassing chamber 6 to beneath the main combustion chamber 7 at 21 to direct volatile matter evolved by the fuel in chamber 6 through the burning fuel in chamber 7. Fuel 4 is fed from hopper 3 via duct 5 to degas sig chamber 6 above part 9 of the two-part reciprocating grate 9, 10 driven by mechanism 16 in ash pit 11. The fuel is partially burnt with primary air from inlet 22 as it passes through restricted opening 8 into combustion chamber 7 on to grate section 10 where it is completely burnt by air from inlet 19 which passes through ducts 20 out through 21 and up through the grate part 10, the resultant ash falling into well 15 to be removed by feed screw 14. Volatile matter evolved in chamber 6 passes both through restriction 8 and through ducts 20 to burn completely in combustion chamber 7 with secondary air from inlet 23, the resultant exhaust gases leaving via vertical, horizontal or two-part duct 17, the draught so created aiding the carry-over of the evolved volatile matter through duct 20 to grate part 10 which is shut off from inlet 22 by baffle 12.
