[Also in Group XII] A boiler furnace comprises a chamber 1 enlarged at the top to form a hopper, and open at the bottom, with a horizontally reciprocable imperforate plate 5 spaced from the bottom, supporting fuel in the chamber, which is started by a motor 9 controlled by a pyrometer 12, with a temperature sensitive device 13 in the hottest zone of the furnace. The boiler furnace shown has a water-jacketed upwardly tapering combustion chamber 1 with a deep bed of fuel, e.g. fine briquetted coal, on an imperforate grate 5. Primary air is drawn through gaps 8, 8<SP>1</SP> between the grate and the bottom of chamber 1 by suction created in the exhaust flue (not shown). Secondary air supplied through a duct 20 completes the combustion of gases leaving the combustion zone 15. The water-jacket 21 may be connected to a hot-water circulation system which may be the boiler circulation system.
