Abstract
710,518. Boiler furnaces. BAILLON, M. L. C. E. Nov. 15, 1951 [Feb. 20, 1951], No. 26836/51. Class 51 (1) A boiler having an internal furnace is provided with a flat hearth 10, Fig. 1, above which is a casing 15 for the supply of fuel, the bottom of the casing forming a slot 27, on the side of the hearth remote from a combustion chamber 9, through which air for combustion is supplied, and a further slot 16, on the side of the hearth adjacent the combustion chamber, through which gases flow to the combustion chamber and through which slag may be removed from the hearth. As shown in Fig. 1 the furnace has a hopper 24 which supplies fuel through the casing 15 in which the fuel is coked, to the flat hearth 10 from which clinker may be pushed into an ashpit 13 by pushers 40. The hopper has apertures 24' for the inlet of primary air. Apparatus 33 is provided in the hopper for loosening the fuel in the casing 15 and breaking up any coke that forms in the lower portion of the casing. The combustion gases flow to flue tubes 6 arranged so that the gases traverse the boiler several times before passing to an exhaust conduit 21 and an exhaust fan 22 driven by an electric motor controlled by a thermostat situated in the path of the flue gases. A conduit 81, which bye-passes the flue tubes 6, leads to the exhaust conduit 21 and is fitted with a weighted damper valve arranged so that when the draught decreases the damper valve opens and allows combustion products to flow through the conduit 81 instead of through the boiler flues. In a modification, Fig. 18, the hearth 10 is provided with rows of apertures 202, 203, through which air may be supplied and a water-cooled baffle 301 is provided in the combustion chamber.
