[Also in Group XIII] In a boiler in which water is heated to boiling point or, for central heating, to below boiling point, combustion gases from an oil burner 9 at one end of a refractory-lined tube 3, which need not be central as shown, pass from the tube and are deflected by a refractory member 14 into flues 5 to an outlet 13. To increase the size of the combustion chamber 15 to burn solid fuel, the water jacket is raised off the base 25 and an annular section with hollow water walls is inserted between the jacket and the base, Fig. 3 (not shown). This extra section may have a grate for the solid fuel or it may be burnt on the deflector 14. Combustion air may be supplied by way of ducts 17 in the deflector 14, through a shut-off valve from a blower 9a of the oil burner. If the oil burner 9 is removed so that only solid fuel is used, a cover may be placed over the burner hole in the boiler top wall 10 and if the tube 3 is not to be used as a flue, a cover is placed over the top of that also. Alternatively, combustion air can be supplied down the tube 3. The inserted section is connected by pipes to at least two ports 20 to the main water jacket. A partition may be disposed in the space between the deflector and the water jacket so that flue gases must flow up through some flues and down through others.
